چکیده

Pulsed corona discharge has been found to be an effective method for the removal of trichloroethylene (TCE) from the aqueous phase. Almost complete degradation over one hour was observed irrespective of the electrolyte used in the solution. The degradation rates observed in these experiments are higher than those for other organic compounds such as phenol in pulsed corona reactors, thereby suggesting that hydroxyl radical attack isn’t the only mechanism for organic compound degradation. This conclusion is supported by other experiments that utilized hydroxyl radical scavengers. The degradation of TCE consistently produced a byproduct that was observed in samples from both the liquid phase and the gas phase of the reactor but the identity of this by-product couldn’t be established conclusively. Ion chromatography of samples from the liquid phase at the end of the experiments showed that 69% of the total chlorine present in initial TCE was released as chloride ion upon the complete degradation of TCE.

Optimization of a Continuous Pulsed Corona Reactor

Pulsed corona discharge processes utilize chemical radicals and ions and highly reactive molecules produced from a high voltage pulsed electrical discharge that is sustained in an aqueous phase medium. Recently, such processes have been used for treating organic contaminants from wastewater. The principle objective of this work is to optimize the hydrogen peroxide needed in the flow reactor to ...

Removal of Nonylphenol by Pulsed Corona Discharge in Water

Degradation of technical mixture of nonylphenol by the pulsed corona discharge in water has been investigated. It was shown that non-thermal plasma generated by the discharge can effectively remove nonylphenol from water. Degradation of nonylphenol followed first order kinetics. The removal efficiency was dependent on the solution conductivity, while a higher degree of degradation was obtained ...

Role of energy input model on the remediation of the p-Nitrophenol contaminated over-wet soil by pulsed corona discharge plasma

Low-temperature plasma has exhibited high efficiency for fast remediation of organic-polluted soil with water content (less than 20%). In the present study, the feasibility of remediation of p-Nitrophenol (PNP) contaminated over-wet soil (water content of 100%) was studied using pulsed corona discharge plasma, which was generated in a needle-plate discharge reactor. Effect of energy input model...

Pulsed Corona Discharge, a New and Effective Technique for Water and Air Treatment

New technologies to solve environmental problems are in demand nowadays. Existing methods cannot always be used because they are too expensive, have unwanted byproducts or simply don't work. A new approach is to create active species in situ so transport losses can be avoided. Pulsed corona discharges is such a method. Its principle is that high energy electrons are created during the propagati...

Degradation of perchloroethylene and dichlorophenol by pulsed-electric discharge and bioremediation

Pulsed electric discharge (PED) and bioremediation were combined to create a novel two-stage system which dechlorinates the halogenated pollutants, 2,4-dichlorophenol and perchloroethylene, with repetitive (0.1-1 kHz), short pulse ( approximately 100 ns), low voltage (40-80 kV) discharges and then mineralizes the less chlorinated products with aerobic bacteria. A 6.1 mM aqueous dichlorophenol s...
